چکیده

“Throaty” voice quality has been regarded by voice pedagogues as undesired and even harmful. The present study attempts to identify acoustic and physiological correlates of this quality. One male and one female subject read a text habitually and with a throaty voice quality. Oral pressure during p-occlusion was measured as an estimate of subglottic pressure. Long-term-average spectrum (LTAS) analysis was used to describe the average voice quality. Sixteen syllables, perceptually evaluated with regard to throaty quality by five experts, were selected for further analyses. Formant frequencies and voice source characteristics were measured by means of inverse filtering, and the vocal tract shape of the male subject’s throaty and normal versions of the vowels [a,u,i,ae] was recorded by Magnetic Resonance imaging. From this material area functions were derived and their resonance frequencies were determined. To test the relevance of formant frequencies to perceived throaty quality, experts rated degree of throatiness in synthetic vowel samples in which the subjects’ measured formant frequency values were used. The main acoustic correlates of throatiness seemed to be an increase of F1, a decrease of F4 and in front vowels also a decrease of F2, presumably resulting from a narrowing of the pharynx. In the male subject voice source parameters suggested a more hyperfunctional voice in throaty samples.

MR and Areafunction Study of Throaty Voice Quality

“Throaty” is a term used for voice quality, generally pejorative, but sometimes considered as a desirable timbral ornament in non-classical singing. The throatiness of a male subject’s examples of the vowels /u, i, a, ae/ pronounced in throaty and normal voice were rated by an expert panel, showing that the examples were representative. The formant frequencies of these vowels were analysed by i...

Effect of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery on the Voice Quality among Patients with Rhinosinus Polyposis

Introduction: Rhinosinus polyposis is associated with voice quality reduction. There has been little evidence about the efficacy of rhinosinus polyps surgery on patients' voice quality so far. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the nasality and acoustic voice changes after rhinosinus polyposis surgery.   Materials and Methods: The population in this study compo...

The Study of Vocal Function in Patients With Early Laryngeal Carcinoma After Transoral Laser Microsurgery

Objective Today transoral laser microsurgery is considered as one of the first options to control early laryngeal cancer, and voice disorder is one of the inevitable complications of this therapeutic component. This study aimed to compare the vocal function in patients with early-stage laryngeal cancer following laser surgery with healthy individuals with normal voice quality using acoustic ana...

Correlation between Acoustic Parameters and Disease Severity and Duration in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Background: Since in multiple sclerosis (MS), changes in speech and voice quality often precede other signs and symptoms; early diagnosis of these changes is necessary. In this study, an acoustic examination of phonation subsystem was performed. Due to the progressive nature of multiple sclerosis, the aim of this study was to examine the correlation between acoustic parameters ...

Effects of Voice Therapy on Vocal Tract Discomfort in Muscle Tension Dysphonia

Introduction: Patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) suffer from several physical discomforts in their vocal tract. However, few studies have examined the effects of voice therapy (VT) on the vocal tract discomfort (VTD) in patients with voice disorders. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of VT on the VTD in patients with MTD.   Materi...
